The Korean manufacturer LG is creating the first big buzz of 2012 with their 84in Ultra High definition (UD) 3D enabled LCD TV.
Due to preview at this years CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, LG's leviathan screen, with around 8 million pixels, has more than four times the resolution (3,840 x 2,160) of existing Full HD 1080p TVs.
With very little content to support the UD standard, it seems as if the introduction of such a sophisticated piece of kit is little more than a marketing exercise. However, LG have indicated that there is a point to this technology right now.
With the introduction of their 'passive' range of 3D enabled LCD TVs in 2011, LG brought an exciting alternative to the 3D home entertainment mix. One of the few limitations of the Passive system is that the polarized glasses, by blocking out some of the pixels reaching each eye, effectively reduced the picture resolution. LG are keen to point out that their 84in Passive 3D TV future proofs your 3D experience.
Of course, as it stands, this 84in piece of technological artistry will find a home with anyone who wants what is possibly the most desirable TV we have seen for some time. A new slim bezel gives that ultra svelte look, a must have for the style conscious while access to the vast array of LG apps and an upgraded magic motion control with full internet access keep the LG at the very least on level terms with the best TVs from other manufacturers.
There is no word yet on whether this 84in technological showcase will make it into production. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and then gasp at what is likely to be a price tag the wrong side of £4000 ...
