Sony are predicting that by 2014, some 50% of all TVs sold in the UK will be 3D enabled.

3D has been something of a slow burner up to now, with high prices and resistance to 3D glasses both contributing to weak sales figures.

3D has not been perceived as being attractive enough to warrant further investment by consumers, many of whom have recently invested in expensive flat panel TVs.

Consumers are also concerned with the availability of 3D content and the requirement to invest in more new kit, in the shape of a 3D enabled Blu-ray player, if they want to enjoy 3D movies in the home.

However, Mike Hocking, a senior Director at SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) believes that economies of scale will begin to normalize the price of 3D TVs and that take up will begin to strengthen as consumers trade up and future proof with 3D.

In the next year or so, the availability of 3D content will reach a point of critical mass, with a growing number of 3D Blu-ray titles and the launch of Sky's dedicated 3D channel.

3D gaming is also expected to have a huge impact, with around two thirds of those interested in buying a 3D TV planning to make use of the new technology for gaming.

Sony are set to take advantage of the slow but steady increase in 3D take up in the home with an extensive range of 3D enabled devices. They currently offer a range of 3D enabled Blu-ray players and have just announced two new 3D enabled TVs

The new screens join Sony's already extensive range of 3D TVs which currently include the LX903, HX903 and HX803 series. For more information you might like to read our guide to the ou want to find out more about the technology, you might like to read our 3D TV, Cinema & Gaming Guide.
