Panasonic V20 LCD

Panasonic have been late coming to the LED party, but with their high end V20 series of LCD TVs which come with Freeview and Freesat tuners it looks like they have arrived in style.

Panasonic's V20 use the less sophisticated 'Edge' based implementation of backlighting technology, employing white LEDs arranged around the inside frame along with a special diffusion panel designed to spread the light evenly behind the panel.

IPS (In Plane Switching) panels provides a wider 178° viewing angle for clearer off-axis images. Panasonic have indicated that these latest IPS panels feature greater levels of contrast with reduced energy consumption.

Covering both bases, the VT20 gets a built-in Freesat HD and Freeview HD tuner for free (no subscription) High Definition programmes. Bear in mind that Freeview HD services are currently being rolled out across the UK, so it is important to check via Freeview whether they are available in your area.

Via the LAN port or using the included wi-fi dongle you can access Panasonic's on line 'Viera Cast' service with the likes of YouTube and 'Skype' (currently showing a 'coming soon' message). You can also stream media files from a PC via DLNA.

Elsewhere you get 100Hz processing, the latest incarnation of Panasonic's picture processing circuitry, V-Real Pro 5, 4 HDMIs, 2 Scart sockets, 2 USB and an SD card slot. The 37in model is available now with the 42in version arriving shortly.
