Despite being declared dead in the water by LCD aficionados, Plasma TV technology has clung onto market share and is now beginning to grow in popularity.

Ironically, Plasma technology is newer than LCD but over the last couple of years has suffered from an onslaught of cheaper, more economical screens from its technological rival. With more efficient screens and the adoption of new technology such as 3D, the tide appears to be turning.

Market analyst DisplaySearch, has reported that 3.39m plasma TVs were sold in the first quarter of this year, a rise of 21.4% for the same period last year.

The undisputed market-leader, Panasonic reported a rise in Plasma TV sales between January and March of almost 30%, selling 1.21m units. During the same period, Samsung sold 981,000 (up 42%) plasma sets while LG sold 844,000 units (up 39%).

With early reports suggesting that Panasonic's 3D enabled P50VT20 offers the best extra dimensional viewing experience, the future for Plasma is beginning to look a lot brighter.

Panasonic are planning to launch additional 3D plasma TVs at IFA in Berlin this September, including 46in and 42in models while LG has just revealed new 50in and 60in Infinia 3D plasma screens in Korea.

While Plasma technology will never again challenge LCD in terms of sheer numbers sold, a predicted 15m unit sales this year is confirmation that the technology still has a lot to offer.
