Virgin Media have confirmed that they will offer their cable TV subscribers Sky Sports 1 and 2 in High Definition from this August.
Those customers who already subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and 2 in their standard definition format will be charged an extra £7 a month to upgrade to HD. This monthly fee will also get you Sky Movies in HD if you currently subscribe to the regular format premium channels.
Getting their act together in the face of stiff competition from Sky and the likes of BT vision, Virgin Media have already announced some very cost effective routes into High Definition TV viewing.
To get free access to BBC, CH4, ITV, Eurosport, ESPN sport, MTVN, Discovery, Sci Fi, E4 and Film4 in HD you need to be an M+ or larger subscriber and pay a one off £49 fee for the box itself; after that HD is completely free.
While they can't offer the range of HD TV channels provided by Sky who have over 40, Virgin Media now offer around 30; and more importantly, the availability of Sky sports in HD was often cited by customers who were choosing between providers.
The latest announcement by Virgin Media also sees the arrival of Sky 1 HD and Sky Arts HD. Both channels will be available as part of the group of 'free' high definition programmes mentioned above.
Executive Director of digital TV services at Virgin Media, Cindy Rose, commented: "As the new home of HD telly, we are delighted to bring our customers Sky Sports in HD at incredibly competitive rates".
