ITV have confirmed that an HD simulcast of the Channel will become available via Sky and the Virgin Media cable platform from 2nd April.
Freesat and Freeview were until recently looking like the only platforms to offer access to all of the 2010 World cup games in HD. Sky and Virgin were anxious to prevent viewers from drifting across to the two subscription free UK TV providers.
The agreement will see almost all of the 64 World Cup games broadcast in High Definition across the Virgin Media and Sky platforms.
Sky and Virgin Media will be relieved that they have reached an agreement to broadcast ITV HD before the World Cup commences this Summer. Both parties have been in negotiation with ITV for nearly two years.
The ITV HD service on Freesat will also become a mirror image (simulcast) of the full ITV1 channel. Freesat users currently have to wait for a red button to appear while watching regular ITV to indicate that a programme is available in High Definition.
Peter Fincham, ITV's director of television, channels and online commented: "All of our output will benefit from the stunning picture quality that high definition offers, whether it's ITV's original drama, landmark factual shows, entertainment events or our live football,".
