Based on their current IPS LCD screens, Panasonic are set to enter the increasingly important LED TV market with their D2 series which features an edge based implementation of the technology.
The D2 line includes two 1080p Full HD models, the TC-L37D2, and TC-L42D2, Panasonic's first crack at the increasingly lucrative LED market; a market which is set to account for the majority of LCD TV sales by 2012.
Panasonic's LED TV's use the less sophisticated 'Edge' based implementation of the technology, employing white LEDs arranged around the inside frame along with a special diffusion panel designed to spread the light evenly behind the panel.
The Edge based system of backlighting has the advantage of a wider color gamut than traditional back-lit LCDs, and ultra slim profiles with the removal of the bulky fluorescent bulbs in traditional LCD TV panels. Combined with the IPS panel, the viewing angle is greatly enhanced, picture contrast is improved and power consumption is reduced.

Elsewhere, the D2 series features a proprietary Universal Dock for iPod and the VIERA Image Viewer™ for digital still JPEG photo viewing. There is also a PC input, 24p Smooth film; 100Hz Motion Picture Pro 4 along with four HDMI inputs.
This is also Panasonic's first foray into larger LCD territory with the production of a 42in model. A useful exercise in gauging public reaction to the availability of larger LCD and same size Plasma screens, it does not necessarily signal a shift in focus towards LCD. Panasonic continue to invest heavily in Plasma technology and see it as part of their overall TV strategy for some time to come.
Due for release in Japan this summer, we have no indication as yet of prices or at what point the new screens will make it to UK.
