Friday, 12 February 2010 10:00 UK

In time for this years world cup in South Africa, Toshiba have revealed details of their Freeview+ HD PVR (Personal Video Recorder).

The HDR5010 comes with a 500GB hard drive for around 120 hours of High Definition recording. Dual tuners allow you to watch one HD channel while recording another.

Elsewhere there are two USB ports (for MP3 playback and JPEG display), an Ethernet connection, 3HDMIs and Scart input.

The Standard Definition Freeview service has become hugely popular in the UK, recently achieving a landmark 10m household installations. There are currently around 50 SD channels.

The Freeview HD rollout has already started, with the Granada region benefiting from the upgrade late 2009. The availability of Freeview HD services will progress in line with the conversion from analogue to digital. High Definition channels including BBC1, ITV1 and CH4 will become available.

Although many of us will be able to watch the 2010 World Cup in glorious High Definition, Freeview HD won't be available in all UK regions. Check the Freeview website to see the timetable for your region.

If you are lucky enough to be in a Freeview HD region for the world cup, you might like to treat yourself to the Toshiba HDR5010 when it becomes available this May. We say treat yourself, because at £350 at launch, it doesn't come cheap.
