Samsung B8000 LED TV

With an irresistible combination of stylish ultra slim profiles and the promise of plasma busting black level performance, consumers have been attracted in vast numbers to LED TV's in 2009.

While the technology has been around for a few years now, 2009 has been the year that LED TV has really captured the buying public's imagination. With the introduction of 'Edge' based screens in 2009, the technology has become much more affordable.

Widespread consumer adoption is due in no small part to the introduction of Samsung's 6000, 7000 and 8000 series. The Korean manufacturer captured a massive 90% of the 3m or so LED TV's sold in 2009.

This 3m will start to look like small fry however, with a predicted to rise to 16m units in 2010 and by 2013, analysts are predicting that LED TV's will account for the majority of LCD's sold. Sales are predicted to reach a massive 130m, which would represent 61.5% of the entire market.

Sharp have been quickest to react to Samsung's dominance with the introduction of their own range of affordable edge based LED TV's. Having been caught napping a little by its Korean rival, LG are are planning a wholesale assault on the LED TV market with a huge range of models planned for 2010 and beyond. They have recently introduced their visually stunning SL9000 LED series.

There are currently two different types of LED lighting technology available to consumers, 'edge based' and 'local dimming'. As the name suggests, 'edge based' LED's are situated around the TV's frame rather than covering the whole pane. LED TV's using 'local dimming' light the entire rear of the screen, not just the perimeter, which allows various sections of the screen to be more precisely controlled.

Within the LED TV market itself it has become clear that consumers are opting for the slimmer 'Edge' based implementation of the technology even if that means sacrificing picture quality. Edge based LED TV's accounted for around 80% of all LED units sold.
