Although there has been no confirmation from the BBC, their monthly iPlayer press release pack contains details of an application to bring the corporation's video on demand service to the iPhone.

The development of an iPhone app by the BBC follows their iPhone optimized web site which has been available since March 2008.

Again, there has been no official confirmation, but it looks like the new app will feature the ability to download as well as stream content to an iPhone along with a feature through which you can view live content.

Screen shots available within the press release pack suggest that the iPhone can connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Apple's iPhone and iTouch devices currently account for around 7% of all iPlayer downloads (from the BBC's optimized web site). Having recognized the huge potential for video on demand directly through iPhone/iTouch, the BBC were prompted to commission the new application.

As part of a wider strategy, the BBC have been implementing iPlayer functionality across a wide range of platforms and devices. They are currently in negotiation with Microsoft to implement it on the Xbox360 games console having already reached an agreement to make it available through the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii.

Of course, we are all hoping that the BBC will maintain their public service ethos and make the new iPhone app available for free ...
