The BBC's head of Future Media & Technology, Rahul Chakkara, has announced that iPlayer for Freesat boxes will be introduced within the month.
The Freesat version of iPlayer uses the MHEG 5 interactive TV standard (adopted by Freesat) to select and present internet sourced video streams; the good news for Freesat users is that they will not have to modify their existing equipment and this version of iPlayer is the 'full fat' version rather than a streamlined compromise.
The iPlayer for Freesat will be a Beta deployment with the BBC also confirming that they are looking at its integration on a wide range of platforms.
Interestingly, Chakkara also revealed that there is a version of BBC iPlayer planned for November which is designed to work with any standard HTML browser. It will use a media playback API that is compatible with HTML4 as well as HTML5.
Chakkara also confirmed that the BBC is planning to bring iPlayer to the Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 platform which works with an increasing number of HDTV's as well as many smartphones. With the potential to greatly expand iPlayer reach, deployment is planned for April 2010.
