Indicating that they still see a big future for the technology, Samsung have demonstrated a 30in AOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) TV optimised for 3D viewing.

Samsung are claiming that their 2.5mm thick 30in AMOLED TV is the first to support 3D stereoscopic pictures along with a full HD resolution.

The AMOLED TV is powered by Samsung’s patented Simultaneous Emission with Active Voltage (SEAV) and Crosstalk (allowing each eye to see parts of both 3D images) technology. Samsung believe that the prototype screen significantly reduces the dizziness and eye fatigue associated with 3D viewing.

Many commentators were starting to believe that the big manufacturers were going cold on OLED technology; there being no significant news for some time and with the emergence of LED hinting at a much cheaper, albeit less superior alternative.

Furthermore, the vice president of Samsung, Kinam Kim spoke enthusiastically about the future of OLED Television. Kim believes that OLED panels from 40in to 50in will compete against LCD technology in 4 to 5 years.
