Designed to enable wider access to Channel 5 and paving the way for High definition services on the platform, Freeview users will need to retune their set-top boxes on 30th September.
Around 18 million homes with Freeview set-top boxes will be affected by the upgrade and those who currently receive Channel 5 will also need to retune. In addition, around 7.5 million TV's with built-in Freeview will need to be retuned.
The retuning process will give more than 500,000 Freeview homes access to Channel Five for the first time. A brand new channel called Quest will become available to most Freeview homes, on channel 38.
Managing director of Freeview, Ilse Howling, stated: "These are significant and necessary changes which will immediately bring Freeview viewers new channels, introduce new homes to exiting channels and prepare the platform for the future availability of Freeview HD,".
By June 2010, Manchester, Bradford, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds London and Newcastle regions will be able to receive ITV1 in HD on Freeview.
