Emma Scott, the MD of Freesat says that the free-to-air satellite service has now reached 600,000 households, doubling its take up over the past year.

Freesat is a free (no subscription) digital TV satellite service which offers over 140 digital TV and radio channels. The service was launched on 6th May 2008 as a joint venture between the BBC and ITV.

Freesat has the advantage of around 98% UK coverage and for those of us who crave High Definition (HD) material, Freesat comes with two HD channels, BBC and ITV HD. Despite the impressive adoption by UK households, critics have pointed to the fact that there have been no new HD channels of late. Many users are also frustrated by the lack of iplayer integration which was promised some time ago.

For those of us wanting the greatest range of HD material, there is only one real choice, Sky, which offers over 20 HD channels. With the coming of HD channels to Freeview, Freesat may see its popularity decline, but in the meantime, its coverage and choice are enough to attract an impressive mass of new users.
