Recognizing the growing popularity of the technology, Sony are planning to introduce their super thin ZX5 LCD TV with LED backlighting at the CEATEC expo in Tokyo on October 6th this year.
With OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology on the backburner for now, Sony are hoping to capitalize on the huge interest LED backlighting technology has generated. They are also hoping to make up some of the lost ground to the likes of Samsung who have already notched up over half a million LED sales this year.
The ZX5 uses an 'Edge Based' implementation of LED technology, which gives the screen a thickness of just 15.8mm. If you would like to find out more about the technology you might like to read our LED TV Guide.
The ZX5 employs a separate tuner/media receiver for a wireless 1080p connection. Elsewhere there is Motionflow 240Hz and Bravia Engine 3 picture processing. An Ethernet port gives DLNA capability to stream multimedia files to the TV across a home network.
As you would expect, all of this doesn't come cheap, with the 46in model expected to sell for 550,000 Yen (£3,600); while the 52in model will sell for around 650,000 Yen. If you can't wait for the ZX5, Sony's rather lovely ZX1 is available in the UK now.
