Sky promise 3D TV Channel by 2010
Friday, 07 August 2009 10:00 UK

Utilising the existing capabilities of their Sky+ HD platform, Sky are planning to launch a stereoscopic 3D channel by 2010, 'making TV come to life as never before'.

For all the recent developments in audio visual technology such as High Definition images and sound, the average TV is still capable of receiving only one image at a time, 2D. Sky's Stereoscopic 3D technology creates the illusion of 3D by displaying two different images at high speed, one for the left eye, the other for the right.

Those of you who remember 'Jaws' in 3D at the cinema will also remember that to benefit from the 3D effect required the use of special glasses. Unfortunately, the new system from Sky also requires the use of custom specs.

It is unclear at the moment just how much 3D programming Sky will be able to broadcast when the new service goes live, but there is expected to be a good selection of movies, entertainment and sport. Sky have already trialed their new 3D service, filming a selection of live events and popular programmes in the new format.

On Thursday 2 April Sky broadcast the UK’s first live event in 3D TV to, a concert performed by the group 'Keane'. A special performance by English National Ballet of Swan Lake was captured in 3D on the 9 April and selected episodes of gladiators have also been filmed in the new format.

Although existing Sky customers will not need to upgrade their current set-top boxes, to benefit from the new 3D broadcasts they will need to invest in a 3D capable TV. Sky will release more details on their new service throughout 2009.
