Sony launch flagship ZX1 LCD TV
Wednesday, 29 July 2009 09:15 UK

Sony's innovative ZX1 employs LEDs mounted in the four corners of the frame along with a separate wireless media receiver to achieve a waif like screen thickness of just 9.9mm.

The ZX1 uses Wireless 1080 technology, employing a separate base station (Media Receiver) to stream signals from attached AV equipment to the TV up to a distance of 30m metres. The Media Receiver has an integrated MPEG4 AVC-HD2 tuner as well as DVB-T and DVBC 3 digital broadcast and cable tuners. This means users can access free-to-air High Definition TV as well as standard digital broadcasts where they are present.

The Media Receiver can be positioned anywhere in the vicinity of the TV as it uses RF (Radio Frequency) omni directional technology rather than a line-of-sight standard infra-red system. TV signal cables and inputs from other devices such as DVD players will connect to the media receiver which can then be kept out of sight.

Sony's 'Edge' based LED technology is not situated behind the TV but on the four corners. Powerful optics distribute the light from the corners uniformly across the whole screen.

Elsewhere you get Sony's Bravia 2 picture processing and 100Hz processing.

The 40in ZX1 is available in the UK now, to be followed shortly by 46in and 50in models.
