Disney and Panasonic offer movies on SD cards
Thursday, 23 July 2009 10:00 UK

Designed to promote viewing across a greater range of devices, Disney and Panasonic plan to offer movies on SD cards.

Due for release this November in Japan, Pirates of the Caribbean and the National Treasure series will be the first films to be made available on the SD format. Subsequent releases on SD will coincide with the normal DVD release of a film. If the concept proves popular, Europe should get the benefit of compact film storage in 2010.

The SD card format has been around since 2000 and has proven to be very popular. Today it is widely used in digital cameras, digital camcorders, handheld computers, PDAs, Media Players, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video game consoles. Standard SD card capacities range from 1 MB to 4 GB.

The first film titles available on SD card will be priced at around the equivalent of £30 which is about twice the cost of normal DVD. Prices will almost certainly drop to DVD equivalent if the concept takes off.
