Blu-ray functions for the iPhone
Wednesday, 22 July 2009 10:40 UK

Available via an apple store application, certain aspects of your Blu-ray high definition player will be controllable through your iPhone or iTouch.

Universal Studios have been the driving force behind the application, which makes use of 'BD Live', the Blu-ray profile standard which amongst other things provides access to bonus content associated with a particular disc from the internet.

Universal’s Blu-ray release of the Fast and Furious will be the first film to include the iPhone and iTouch functionality. The new app will provide access to a ‘virtual car garage’ to flick through cars from the film and rotate them 360 degrees.

Although many of you will not be that excited about the prospect of interactive features on this particular film, it is just the first step towards all sorts of interactive features. There are plans to add access to the likes of IMDB (the film archive) and Wikipedia for film related information.

Universal may go even further if the concept proves successful by giving iPhone users the ability to remote control their Blu-ray player and download bonus content to watch later.

The Fast & Furious is out on 2-disc Blu-ray on July 28 accompanied by the new iPhone/iTouch app available for download on the Apple store the same day.
