Sony S5500 entry level LCD TV's a compelling option
Saturday, 18 July 2009 11:30 UK

If you are prepared to forego some of the bells and whistles available on higher spec screens, Sony's s5500 entry level LCD TV's are a compelling option.

Internet connectivity has emerged as the current must have accessory on any self respecting flat screen TV, but if you are willing to resist such indulgences, Sony's S5500 series will reward you with one of the best performances we have come across for the price .

You won't find Sony's 'AppliCast' technology which connects the latest range of BRAVIA TVs through a built-in Ethernet port to provide internet connectivity. There is no DNLA or the Xcross media bar interface, but to expect such adornments is to miss the point of the S5500 series. These are basic, fairly well specified TV's which offer just about as much performance for your money as it is possible to get.

What you get is a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution screen which offers decent connectivity with amongst other things 3 HDMI's a USB 2.0 input. Unfortunately you have to make do with Bravia 2 rather than the latest incarnation of Sony's picture processing engine, Bravia 3, but there is 1080p/24fp compatibility.

Every element of the S5500 package performs well. The black levels are decent and true to form, Sony puts in one of the most vibrant colour performances around. Standard and High definition picture performance is excellent and even the acoustics are above average. There are better performing TV's out there, but put these screens into their true perspective and you have some of the best screens for the price available today.

The S5500 series are available in 22in, 26in, 32in, 37in and 40in sizes and are available in UK stores now.
