According to the research organisation iSuppli, the popularity and adoption of LED based LCD TV's is set to mushroom within the next couple of years.

By 2013, TV's which employ LED technology will represent 39% of the total market (around 90m units), a huge increase from today's 3%.

LED TVs use a technology which replaces the traditional always-on single bar-style fluorescent backlight present on the majority of LCD's with hundreds of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

There are currently two different types of LED lighting technology available to consumers, 'edge based' and 'local dimming'. As the name suggests, 'edge based' LED's are situated around the TV's frame rather than covering the whole pane. LED TV's using 'local dimming' light the entire rear of the screen, not just the perimeter, which allows various sections of the screen to be more precisely controlled.

LED technology offers a number of advantages over normal backlighting, including faster response times, a wider colour palette and better contrast. Without a bulky backlight manufacturers can produce much slimmer screens.

Making LED based TV's even more popular with consumers and environmentalists is the average 40% saving in running costs over traditional LCD TV's. The potential savings in running costs and the fact that 'edge base' LED TV's are likely to predominate (lowering production costs over 'local dimming' alternatives) will combine to make LED TV's much more financially attractive.

Sony and Samsung are currently leading the way by offering LED TV products in the UK, with the likes of LG and Sharp soon to introduce their own offerings.

Sony's X4500 series LCD TV's along with Samsung's F96, A786 and A956 series are currently the most sophisticated LED derivatives available in the UK, using clusters of LEDs which can be controlled individually. Samsung have recently introduced their more affordable 'edge based' 6000, 7000 and 8000 series LED TV's which have been well received.
