In a sign that some confidence is returning to the flat panel market, Sharp have introduced a range of LED-backlit LCD TV's and also plan to increase production of their mainstream sets by around 10%.
With their new LE700 series Sharp are aiming in their own words to ‘bring LED technology to the mainstream,’ . The innovative panels are constructed around proprietary Full-Array LED backlighting diffuser sheets, which promise to take illumination to a new level.
The ultra-slim TVs all feature 120Hz processing and will be available in 32in, 40in, 46in and 52in screen sizes. There is a quoted response time of 4 milliseconds and the new screens (apart from the 32in) provide access to Sharp's AQUOS 'net internet content portal, featuring amongst other things, weather and news.
A concession to budgetary constraints is the lack of 'local dimming' technology, featured on higher end LED TV's from the likes of Samsung. Local dimming allows 'banks' of LED lights to be controlled (darker or lighter) separately.
Sharp seems confident that the flat panel market has hit bottom and this confidence is reflected by a 10% increase in production at its massive Kameyama plant. This increase will take monthly output up to 100,000 units. Sharp also confirmed that it will open a new LCD production facility at Sakai City, in October 2009.
