Freeview to get iPlayer and timeshifting

These are exciting times for anyone who uses or is planning to use the Freeview platform for their TV viewing. In addition to the arrival of Freeview HD, viewers will also be able to access iPlayer and enjoy the benefits of 'timeshifting' from 2010.

With its huge and growing popularity, the people at Freeview have been eager to add iPlayer. Ilse Howling their Managing Director recently announced that plans to rollout the BBC's on-demand service were being brought forward. Isle Howling added: "Overall, Freeview is bucking the trend of the recession. People are cutting back on certain spending, but not on television".

Since its introduction on Christmas Day 2007, iPlayer users have watched the BBC's programmes 250 million times. With its continued expansion (iPlayer has recently added HD content) iPlayer usage is likely to accelerate further and Freeview see its addition as an essential part of their development strategy.

From 2010 Freeview will also offer timeshifting functions which will bring much of Sky+ type functionality to the platform. Timeshifting allows the viewer to pause (and resume) life TV and may include more advanced features such as 'instant rewind'. If you have been started watching a program and decide you would like to keep it - press record and it will record the whole program including the part just watched.
