Channel 5 in High Definition coming to Freeview
Channel 5 HD

The TV regulator Ofcom has confirmed that Channel 5 will be available in High Definition on Freeview from late next year.

The High Definition version of Channel Five will join HD versions of BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and S4C when it comes to digital terrestrial television (Freeview).

Like most HD channels, 5 HD will be a 'simulcast' of the existing channel with programmes such as the 'Gadget Show' and 'Crime Scene Investigation', although the schedule currently makes provision for 'peak hours' only broadcasting. Channel 5 have indicated that they may share daytime slots in HD with another channel and that they also plan to broadcast a selection of blockbuster movies in HD.

Channel 5 beat of competition for the remaining slot from Channel 4 who wanted to add a HD version of their E4 channel.

Ofcom have previously confirmed that the first three HD Freeview channels will become available from late this year in the Granada region. The rest of the UK will gradually gain access to HD channels on Freeview as part of the digital switchover process, scheduled to complete in 2012.
