With a number of technologically innovative as well as simply stylish new products, the Blu-ray format has received a timely boost.
Looking quite stunning in its 'Touch of Colour' livery, Samsung's svelte like BD-P4600 Blu-ray player (pictured) is claimed to be the first wall mountable product of this type in the world.
The BD-P4600's beauty is more than skin deep however. This is a profile 2.0 blu-ray player which supports JPEG and DiVX playback. There is also an optional USB dongle to provide Wi-Fi connectivity.
LG and Samsung have recently announced networked Blu-ray players with Panasonic planning to launch a 'universal' Blu-ray/VHS/DVD/CD combo deck sometime this year.
LG's BD370 Blu-ray player can access video-on-demand via YouTube and stream movies directly from the internet (currently via 'Netflix' in the US only). LG's feature packed player supports MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX files along with videos encoded in the AVCHD camcorder format.
Panasonic's DMP-B15 is the first portable Blu-ray player to come to the market, although with a resolution of 1024 x 600 it can't display 1080p images. An 8.9in LCD screen is joined by a single HDMI output, bitstream output for DTS-Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. The DMP-B15 offers access to Panasonic's 'Viera Cast' Internet content along with Amazon Video On Demand for US users.
Despite prophets of doom predicting the demise of the format, Blu-ray has seen impressive unit sales growth. Sales figures from the run up to this Christmas are up almost 400% to around 1.5m units from the same period in 2007.
