Virgin to expand High Definition programming

Having concentrated predominantly on High Definition programming on demand, Virgin Media has at last conceded the need for a regular HD schedule with the planned launch of four regular channels.

Virgin have not released any details of their new HD line up with Virgin Media CEO, Neil Berkett indicating that the new channels would appear over the next three to four months.

Virgin have a lot of catching up to do if they want to rival Sky's regular HD schedule. Virgin point to the fact that once its remaining analogue homes are switched to digital, the available capacity would have the potential to deliver between 30-40 HD channels over the current 24Mbps-capable fibre-optic.

Virgin Media might receive a huge boost to its HD offering given the BBC is set to launch its own HD content onto the iPlayer. HD video on demand will be a huge selling point for Virgin's who have already integrated the iPlayer into their cable services.

We would hazard a guess that Virgin would love to get hold of as many of Sky's HD channels as possible but that the satellite provider is either charging too much (realising the huge competitive advantage that their HD schedule gives them) or prefers to withhold access at this time.
