Sheduled for completion in 2012, areas of the UK have already undergone the conversion from analogue to digital.
The 6th November witnessed the conversion of around 50,000 homes in the Scottish Borders to a Freeview (digital) only service.
The transition to digital marks the end of an era which has seen over 70 years of continuous analogue broadcast into the majority of UK homes.
Until the launch of Digital Terrestrial Broadcasts (commonly known as Freeview), Digital TV was the exclusive preserve of satellite providers. By 2012, if everything goes to plan, Freeview should match the peak coverage achieved by the analogue service of 98.5 percent of UK homes
If you are currently a Virgin Media or Sky subscriber then the digital switchover will not affect you. If you are currently viewing terrestrial (analogue) TV through an aerial, there are a number of options for making the transition to digital. If you choose a subscription service the installation is done for you. Alternately you can buy a digital Freeview box to convert your existing TV or invest in a new TV with Freeview built in.
Around 10% of homes in the UK will need to upgrade their aerials to accept the new digital services.
The Digital UK website has all the information on when your region is due to convert to digital and what equipment you may need to complete the conversion.
