Never ones to hide their light under a bushel, Sony are claiming the world's slimmest commercially available LCD TV along with the fastest frame refresh rate from any flat panel.
Sony recently previewed the ZX1 series which dispenses with the traditional LCD backlight for an innovative approach which sees white LEDs mounted in the four corners of the frame (Sony's Edge LED technology). The result of this innovative technology, a waif like screen thickness of just 9.9mm.
Weighing in at just over 12kg the ZX1 achieves its remarkable sleekness with a little help from a separate media receiver. The screen's single HDMI is actually there to communicate with a wireless box offering additional connectivity in the shape of a further three HDMI inputs. An ethernet and USB port facilitates 1080i streaming with 'Bravia 1080 Wireless' technology. The ZX1 will be available in Japan towards the end of the year.
Sony have also demonstrated the world's first 240Hz LCD TV series, the Bravia W1, which employs their familiar Motionflow technology. Samsung have also recently prototyped a 240Hz LCD TV screen but Sony are claiming that their 200Hz Motion Flow enabled Z4500 will be the first commercially available screen to achieve this level of frame refresh.
Using mathematical algorithms to insert three additional frames for every original, the Z4500 series will up the frame rate from the standard 50 to 200fps (frames per second).
There is no indication from Sony as yet to if and when their ZX1 series will be available in the UK. The Z4500 series is scheduled to arrive in the UK this Christmas and will be available in 40in, 46in and 50in sizes.
