The BD-Live enabled BDP-S550 is the latest high definition Blu-ray player from Sony to arrive on UK shores.
Like its slightly less well specified BDP-S350 sibling, the BDP-S550 offers 24p True Cinema mode (allowing you to play films at their original speed), upscaling of standard definition content to 1080p, and is Profile 2.0 compliant. Profile 2.0 (also known as BD-Live) is built in to the S550 while S350 owners will need to download a firmware update.
Both players have Ethernet connections which are integral to many BD-Live functions. Core functionality within 'BD Live' allows a disc to check online each time it is played - for new content related to the particular film. This content could be anything from movie trailers, ringtones to actor info which can then be viewed through picture-in-picture mode. Storage for downloaded content on the S350 and S550 is provided by plugging a USB device into the port at the rear of each player.
Both the S350 and S550 feature enhanced compatibility with high definition sound formats. They include support for 7.1-channel Dolby TrueHD, Digital Plus, dts-HD and Master Audio, while the BDP-S550 also offers dts-HD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding.
