Aiming to succeed where many have failed in the past, Samsung plans to bring the internet to its latest range of LCD TV's with its 'InfoLive' service.
In an effort to capitalize on consumer surfing habits, which sees a large proportion of TV viewers browsing the net between TV programmes, Samsung has partnered with Yahoo to provide news, finance and weather information on their latest 7, 8 and 9 series televisions.
The InfoLive feature uses RSS web feeds to display up-to-date information on-screen. Samsung believes that by introducing 'bite sized' interactive choices, rather than crowding the screen with too much information, they will conquer consumer aversion to using the TV for surfing and viewing. Web content is accessible via an integrated Ethernet port or via Samsung's wireless LAN adapter, which connects to the users broadband service.
Samsung's see InfoLive technology as the first step towards full web integration for their TV's which will eventually see users interactively viewing their eBay auction, preview instant message, all through the TV's remote control.
On the multimedia front, Samsung's IPTV's go much further with a whole host of new technologies. WISELINK Pro enables the playback of media types from USB devices, while DLNA allows users to stream multimedia content from their PCs. Content Library features embedded content such as interactive fitness exercises, cooking recipes and built-in games that can be played via the TV's remote control.
Samsung's 8 series IPTV's are available in the UK now with a choice of 40in, 46in or 52in screens.
