Keen to get a slice of the lucrative High Definition (HD) market, Toshiba has introduced Super Resolution Technology (SRT) on some of their high end LCD TV's.
SRT sits alongside Toshiba's XDE (extended definition) upscaling technology which the company claims has the ability to upscale conventional DVD's to 720p, 1080i or 1080p.
In what may seem to some as increasingly desperate measures to claw back some of the loses suffered through the demise of their HD DVD high definition format (Blu-ray becoming the dominant format), Toshiba are nevertheless committed to SRT technology and early indications are that their XDE technology does actually produce some impressive results.
Technical details for SRT are rather thin on the ground at the moment with only a general indication that CRT will 'upconvert' standard definition broadcasts to 'feel like HD'. The degree to which the technology can 'fill in' missing detail of an SD broadcast will be the measure of its success.
Toshiba's SRT LCD TV's will be available in the US this autumn. No indications as yet on UK availibilty.
