Featuring the same Atom 1.6GHz processor and 6,600 mAh battery as the Eee PC 901, the new Eee PC 1000 from Asus now comes with a larger 1,024 x 600 10in screen and not surprisingly a bigger keyboard.
This is the Windows (XP) version of the 1000 and as such the 40GB solid state drive is replaced by an 80GB mechanical one.
Previous Eee PC models from Asus have always won praise for their innovative approach to computing on the move but for many have not really been practical enough for serious home or business use.
The Eee PC 1000 now offers a serious alternative to the likes of MSI Wind and HP Mini-Note 2133 within the mini PC market. With greater size of course comes increased weight and at 1.45kg the Eee PC feels considerably heavier than some of its smaller sibling in the Asus range. The 6,600 mAh battery has now got more work to do but will still be good for around 6 hours of light use which is class leading for this category.
Elsewhere there are three USB ports, 10/100 Ethernet, Bluetooth and a card reader for SD, MMC and SDHC formats along with a 1.3mp webcam. There is support for Dolby's 'Sound Room audio', which includes their acclaimed Dolby Headphone technology.
