Blockbuster to compete with Apple TV?

Although the exact nature of their initiative is not yet clear, it looks like Blockbuster will introduce a set-top device in the near future to compete with Apple TV.

Apple TV is a digital media receiver (essentially a home entertainment device used to connect a high definition TV to a computer network in order to retrieve media files such as music, pictures or video) manufactured by Apple. It is designed to play digital content from any Mac OS X or Windows computer onto a high definition TV.

A source within Blockbuster was quoted as saying "We're talking to numerous companies and vendors about products, services, alliances and initiatives that can help us achieve our mission to transform Blockbuster into a company that provides access to media content across multiple channels."

If rumours circulating around Hollywood are to be believed, Blockbuster's new device looks likely to be a stand-alone product along the lines of Apple TV.

The new service will be launched in conjunction with 'Movielink' (the Apple owned movie download service) towards the end of April.
