Hitachi is the latest company to join a small but growing band of flat screen manufacturers offering built-in hard disc recorders on some of their products. Hitachi's 50in P50XR01 Plasma allows you to record from one Freeview channel while watching another. With a 250GB hard disc, well over 100 hours of Standard Definition recording is possible.
Hitachi joins the likes of Loewe, Humax and LG who are all offering built-in hard disc recording functionality on some of their offerings.
In an increasingly competitive environment, flat screen manufacturers have adopted hard disc recording features as a unique selling point for some of their products.
The popularity of the feature, which combines a hard disc drive/recorder with the ease of use of an Electronic Programming Guide (EPG), could very well lead to the functionality becoming a standard feature on more panels.
With supreme ease of use, PVR's have become a popular item to purchase alongside an LCD TV. A PVR in a nutshell is a device for the recording of digital TV on computer-like hard drive. With a built-in Electronic programming Guide (EPG) all a user need do is locate a programme within an easy to navigate 'programme menu' and click to record.
One notable absence on the feature list of the P50XR01 (which is found on LG's LT75) is 'series link', which allows you to record all episodes of a particular series.
