Panasonic Final Standard DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player

Being fully compliant with the Blu-ray 'Final Standard' the DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player from Panasonic steals a march on the competition with the inclusion of a number of advanced features.

The crowning glory of the 1.1 Blu-ray implementation is picture-in-picture, which on the surface seems like a fairly standard feature, but in reality opens up some interesting interactive possibilities.

The viewer could, for example choose to take advantage of picture-in-picture functionality by having an actor pop up to discuss a particular scene. Although there are no discs currently able to take advantage of p-in-p, the Panasonic's twin tuners (one tuner having the ability to simultaneously read other parts of a disc) is currently the only Blu-ray player able to take advantage of this feature.

With HDMI 1.3, 1080/24p playback and Deep Color Compatibility the DMP-BD30 begins to look quite impressive on the spec front. When you consider that it also sports an SD Card slot coupled with the AVCHD codec (which allows images recorded on a high capacity HD SD card to be outputted from the player's HDMI terminal in their original 1080p format) it starts to look very interesting indeed.

At just under $500 in the US, the DMP-BD30 will certainly be price competitive. No word yet as to when this unit will be available in the UK, some time soon we hope ...
