BDP-S500

Sony are adding to their range of Blu-ray devices with the introduction of two new stand alone players, the BDP-S300 and the BDP-S500.

Both players feature 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output with 1080p upscaling through HDMI to HDTV ready sets. They also support BD-R/RE (BDMV mode), DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW (Video Mode), CD, CD-R/RW (CD-DA format), MP3, and JPEG on DVD recordable media.

Additionally, the BDP-S300 and BDP-S500 have support for the AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic. AVCHD is a high definition recording format seen recently on Sony's range of HD Camcorders.

Marking it apart form the BDP-S300, HDMI on the BDP-S500 goes from 1.2 to 1.3 to enable output of HD audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. The BDP-S500 also supports internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD.

Both players feature BRAVIA Theatre Sync, a one-touch facility that controls other HDMI-connected Theatre Sync-enabled hardware.

Available now for around £350 online, the BDP-S300 will be a welcome budget addition to the blu-ray fold. Expected to retail for around £500, the BDP-S500 will be available in the UK towards the end of this month.
