Samsung currently has the worlds largest commercially available LCD in the LN70F91BD, a 70in leviathan which is only on sale at the moment in Korea, but should be available world wide by the end of 2007.
Likely to become the LE70F96DX for the UK, this unit is certainly not just a vehicle designed to show off Samsung's prowess for making some of the worlds largest LCD panels. This panel is a technological tour de force designed to bring consumers the most immersive home viewing experience available today.
With three HDMI inputs (1.3), Full HD (1080 x 1920) and 100Hz processing, the specification of the LE70F96Dx is at the forefront of LCD technology, and in addition, will showcase much of the latest innovative technology from the Korean manufacturer.
The LE70F96BDX sports a light-emitting diode (LED) backlight in place of a conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) version with local dimming technology which enables the LED backlight to be turned off in dark image areas, facilitating a dynamic contrast ratio of 500,000:1.
While LCD has been making great strides in the large screen stakes, Samsung's 70in offering is dwarfed by the largest flat panel TV available in the UK, Panasonic's 103in TH103PF9EK, on sale for a cool £45,000.
Likely to go on sale for around half the price of the Panasonic, the LE70F96BDX doesn't quite fall into the budget category for flat panels. If you have your heart set on a large screen, and the budget doesn't quite stretch to the Samsung, there are some surprisingly affordable alternatives.
The 60in flat panel sector offers excellent value for money. Products from Panasonic, Sharp and LG to name but a few can offer well performing panels of this size for as little as £3,000.
