Toshiba launch three new HD DVD players
Toshiba HD-A3

Toshiba are launching a wave of third generation high definition DVD players which include three new models, the HD-A3, HD-A30 and HD-A35.

With a chassis depth of just 6cm and black gloss smooth rounded design, these new players certainly have the looks, and first impressions indicate they have a technological punch to live up to the chic design.

A major feature of all three machines is 1080p/24 frames per second (24p) support. Movies have traditionally been filmed at a frame rate of 24fps (frames per second) but TV's traditionally show video footage at 25fps which has necessitated a slight but noticeable increase in film speed for playing movies. The new feature allows films to be shown in their original format.

The entry level HD-A3 player features 1080i output capability. while the HD-A30 and HD-A35 output Full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080p). Additionally, the two higher end models sport Toshiba's “CE-Link” (HDMI-CEC), which enables two way control between the player and a TV through an HDMI connection.

Things start to get really interesting with the top of the range HD-A35 with 5.1 channel analog audio outs and support for 'Deep Color'. Deep colour offers the potential for billions of possible colour combinations (but remember you'll need a TV that can accept and display Deep Color sources, and a DVD that has the correct encoding).

No word yet on when the new players will be available in the UK but expect them to arrive towrads the end of the year. In the meantime we have the excellent HD-XE1 to keep us entertained.
