Pioneer Full HD plasma screens this October

Hot on the heals of its all new 8th generation plasma screens, Pioneer will introduce Full HD panels in Japan this October.

With 1080 lines avilable, Full HD screens in theory allow you to show the 1080i HD format (Sky etc) exactly as it arrives at the back of your TV. However, 720/768 line panels are only able to show 1080i HD sources after employing various video processing techniques to 'downscale' the pictures to the TV's lower native resolution. With such video processing there is more potential for the image quality to be degraded.

Pioneer's Full HD screens will arrive in 50in and 60in sizes and are expected to sell for 720,000 yen ($6,060) and 990,000 yen ($8,340) respectively. Expect to see them on these shores early in the new year.

As well as a Full HD spec (1920 x 1080) the emphasis again is on the production of the deepest blacks possible. Pioneer believe that without black or very close to true black, colour accuracy is lost. The new Full HD models will again feature the new pixel drive electrode design allied to 'Pure Drive' video processing to this aim.

Project Kuro (kuro means black in Japanese) has already seen the introduction of two new plasma screens from Pioneer which feature their new 8th generation plasma screen technology.
