Loewe adds to its 'light' LCD range
Loewe L42

German manufacturer Loewe has added a 42in model to its entry level modus range, the L42, which joins existing 32in and 37in versions.

Loewe has repositioned itself in the flat panel market by discontinuing its production of plasma screens and focusing on the 'premium' end of the LCD market with prices to reflect.

At around £1800 for the 37in and with the 42in model expected to retail for well over £2000, the Modus line up will have to impress to compete against the likes of Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer. The modus range certainly look the part, and will appeal to consumers looking for something a little different form the crop of shiny black screens from the major manufacturers.

In terms of basic specification however the Modus range fails to inspire with just the one HDMI input, which is without the ability to accept 1080p. With a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 rather than Full HD (1920 x 1080) there is nothing inspiring here either.

Loewe is relying heavily on its Image+ picture processing technology to deliver a viewing experience to justify the price premium. Although first indications are that Image+ produces excellent high definition (HD) and standard Definition (SD) pictures, this performance does not offer anything above existing technologies from the likes of Panasonic, Sony or Pioneer.

If the modus range from Loewe was priced at a more realistic level and with its distinctive looks and top notch build quality it could carve out a nice little niche for itself, but as things stand it is simply overpriced.
