With prices tumbling for High Definition DVD players, Pioneer’s BDP-LX70 Blu-ray offering will have to provide something special over its HD DVD and Blu-ray rivals to justify a price tag of around £1,000.

The good news is that first impressions indicate that the BDP-LX70 is the equal of any High definition player out there when it comes to pure picture quality. This performance is due in no small part to the BDP-LX70’s ability to handle the 1080/24p format.

Many consumers are unaware that Regular PAL broadcasting and DVD play movie images back at 25 fps (frames per second) whereas these films are typically shot and encoded at 24fps for cinemas. With the 25fps format images are effectively speeded up and the pitch of sounds and voices is raised.

Another plus is the Pioneer BDP-LX70’s ability to upscale normal DVD’s to 1080p. The results are never going to be HD quality, but the Pioneer is currently the best upscaler out there, and will breath new life into your current standard definition DVD collection.

The BDP-LX70 is certainly one of the most accomplished High Definition players out there at the moment, but a couple of things disappoint. HDMI is 1.2 rather than 1.3 which would have enabled full support for High Definition audio formats. Additionally, there is no compatibility with the new BD 1.1 spec which would give the BDP-LX70 the ability to access interactive java features.
