Within the last few days, Samsung have confirmed their intention to release a dual format high definition player, the BD-UP5000 by November of this year.
Consumers who have been feeling like pawns in the Blu-ray v HD DVD format wars will be glad to know that at an expected retail price of around £400, the BD-UP5000 is expected to cost less than Samsung's current stand alone Blu-ray player, and much less than the only currently available dual format player, LG's BH-100. The BH-100 retails for around a £1,000 and so far has had mixed reviews, with a lack of full support for both formats being a major gripe.
High Def aficionados will be pleased to discover that not only is the BD-UP5000 likely to cost less than half the price of the BH-100, it will also feature full support for both formats, adding the HD DVD interactive system (HDi) as well as Blu-ray Java platform support (BD-Java).
If the BD-UP5000 does actually materialise at the rumoured price it will surely be the enticement that many consumers have been waiting for, to take the plunge into the world of HD.
