HD Projectors Buying

Also in this section: Introduction | Projector Types | Buying your Projector

It is worth bearing in mind the advantages and disadvantages of projector technologies when making a buying choice, but ultimately you get what you pay for. If you are going for a budget model, always look at the contrast ratio. A figure of around 1,300:1 and you'll need a totally blacked out room to get decent performance.

Remember that you will also need a screen to go with your projector. One of your walls at home may be perfectly flat but it is unlikely that it will have the reflectivity required for good performance.

There is nothing quite like popping down to your local electrical retailer and seeing how various projectors perform. Buying any kind of display system can be very subjective, the perception of image quality can change from person to person. Most retailers will give you demos of the latest projectors, and this should be your preferred route to making a final buying decision.

Take a fast paced DVD of your own when you go for a demo and try viewing it with the sound turned off. This will reveal the projectors performance under the most demanding circumstances, and sound off will allow you to concentrate on the image.
