Camcorder features and functions

Some of the more important features you might like to become familiar with.

1. Zoom Lens
There is an important distinction to be made between 'optical' and 'digital' zoom. Concentrate on the figure given for optical zoom, as digital zoom is electronically generated. An optical zoom of 10x will be sufficient for most peoples needs.

2. LCD Screen
Aim for a camcorder with a large (2.7 inches), bright screen. It is important to check out how well the screen works in bright sunlight. Main function are usually accessed from this screen and you can also review footage.

3. Camcorder Mode
A switch to select 'Video' mode or 'Still Photo' mode. Somewhere close (in this case the round silver button just visible on top) is the photo button - press lightly and hold to focus then press more firmly to take a still picture. You will also find a button to switch from wide-angle to telephoto.

4. Flash
Not in this case the memory storage format you may be familiar with but the flash that we are all familiar with; the function which emits a burst of light to enable us to take photos in the dark all low light conditions.

5. Manual Focus
Modern day camcorders are sophisticated pieces of kit and in most situations focus is obtained automatically. For those occasions where your camcorder does not manage to get focus 'lock' you can adjust manually.

6. Intelligent Hotshoe
If you are finding that the built-in microphone on your camcorder is not up to the standard you require, you can add an external one here. You will also find attachments for extra lighting.

7. Microphone
Although the built in microphones on many camcorders look a little puny they are actually very sensitive. The built in microphone should be adequate for most peoples needs.

Other features and functions

Low Light Modes
Most camcorders compensate for low light conditions. Many now make use of infrared light, slow shutter modes, or built-in illumination from LEDs. Sensitivity to low levels of light is measured by 'Lux'.

Resolution
The choice here is between Standard Definition and High Definition footage. See the High Definition Video section of this article for more information.

Recording Format
There are a number of different storage formats available. See the Camcorder types and formats section of this guide for more information.

Still Photography
Most camcorders have a 'Still Photo' which allows you to capture images just like you would with a digital camera. While this is a handy feature to have, remember that a camcorder (even with the same resolution as a digital camera) will not produce pictures of the same quality.

Wide Angle
A growing number of camcorders allow you to shoot footage in wide (16:9) aspect ratio. The advantage of this mode is that your HDTV will display a full picture (no black bars at the top and bottom).

Battery
Think about how long you will be out with your camcorder and see whether the battery life is sufficient. Most camcorders give you the option of a longer life battery. Alternatively you can purchase a spare battery and carry it around with you fully charged.
